LIL BABY'S FRESH: GROWTH, ROOTS & A SOUND THAT STILL HITS
Rating: 7/10
Lil Baby's FRESH is a reminder of why we fell in love with his music in the first place. His sound has definitely elevated over the years, but what we appreciate most is how he's managed to evolve without losing the rawness that made him who he is.
One thing about Lil Baby is that his music has always been motivating, raw and rooted in the hood. It's relatable, especially for those who understand the journey of wanting more for themselves. Seeing him make it out and, more importantly, stay out is something worth celebrating. It's the kind of success story we wish for every Black man trying to transform his life.
Sonically, the album delivers. Every song brings something different, and Lil Baby knows exactly how to cater to every mood. Whether it's a party anthem, something to chill to, a love song or a track for the journey to the function, he gets it. There's also something nostalgic about the project, with moments that channel the raw energy of his 2020 album My Turn, while still showcasing how much his sound has evolved.
A standout moment for us was hearing Odeal's Blame U sampled on Your Fault. As fans of Odeal, it's beautiful seeing his artistry reach a point where other major artists are sampling his work. And honestly, a Lil Baby and Rylo Rodriguez collaboration is almost always guaranteed to hit. In Your Head is no exception.
Our favourites include Mr. Do Something, From The Back, My Side, Your Fault, In Your Head, Like A Brat and Televised.
Our only real critique? While Lil Baby's honesty about relationships has always been part of his appeal, we'd love to hear him explore more beyond the familiar themes of cheating, infidelity and toxic relationships. Particularly from a woman's perspective, these narratives can start to feel repetitive. With the amount of growth he's experienced, there's so much more we'd love to hear him unpack. The talent is undeniable, but a little more emotional depth wouldn't hurt!
Overall, FRESH gets a solid 7/10 from us. The sound is there, the versatility is there, and the growth is undeniable. With a little more depth in the storytelling, there's even greater potential for Lil Baby to take his artistry to the next level.
